Casting of new MyCiTi bus lanes under way in Lansdowne

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate has reached a key milestone with the casting of the first red bus lanes along Govan Mbeki Road, in the vicinity of the Sky Circle project in Lansdowne. All is on track to complete the project by December 2026 and to have the first MyCiTi buses operating along this route in the second half of 2027.

Vuyani Public Transport Interchange moves closer to completion

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, together with senior officials from the Transport Infrastructure Implementation team, recently visited the new Vuyani Public Transport Interchange (PTI), which is currently under construction. Once complete, the PTI will provide dedicated facilities for minibus-taxi operators and serve commuters travelling to Mfuleni, Eerste River, Blackheath, Kuils River and Lwandle, improving connectivity and convenience for the community.

Update on repairs to Stanhope bridge

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate is making good progress with the urgent repair work on the Stanhope bridge in Claremont. The team is currently in week two of the planned six week remedial work timeline. If all goes according to plan the contractor should complete the remedial works in four weeks’ time, which is when the second lane from Claremont Main Road lane will be reopened. The current lane reduction is an emergency intervention after the existing retaining wall on the southeast quadrant of the Stanhope bridge failed on 26 January 2026.

Validator Upgrade - Refunds in Progress

The replacement of validators is now complete at stations and on buses as part of ongoing improvements to the MyCiTi payment system. During this transition, a limited number of passengers experienced errors when using their cards to tap.

City and UCT conducting research to test electric buses in Cape Town

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate, together with the University of Cape Town, will in the coming months undertake research to test and understand how electric buses will operate as part of the City’s MyCiTi bus fleet. The electric bus (e-bus) research is funded by the City of Cape Town and through a grant from the Urban Electric Mobility Initiative (UEMI). The agreement between the City and the eBRT2030 Consortium, the UEMI implementing agent, can now go ahead after the Mayoral Committee has given its approval at its meeting earlier today.
