E1 - GOVAN MBEKI ROAD, FROM OTTERY ROAD TO LINK ROAD IN GUGULETHU
Construction Work Package E1
Areas affected: Philippi, Gugulethu
Start date: September 2023
End date: September 2026
What's Planned
The City of Cape Town intends to start construction in September 2023 along the portion of Govan Mbeki Road connecting Ottery Road with Link Road, in preparation for the next phase of MyCiTi’s bus services.
Phase 2A of MyCiTi will bring quality, safe and direct public transport to more than 30 communities along one of the city’s busiest transport corridors by linking Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Wynberg and Claremont with high frequency, direct services on dedicated lanes, with stations to access and transfer between routes.
All road users and residents will also benefit from intersection upgrades that help ease congestion, safer cycling and walking lanes, improved street lighting and landscaping improvements to uplift the surrounds.
- Upgrade of 2.40 km of Govan Mbeki Road, including dedicated MyCiTi lanes in East and West directions
- Construction of the MyCiTi Vygekraal left aligned median Station on Govan Mbeki Road west of the Duinefontein Road intersection.
- Widening at the bridge abutments on both sides of the road over road bridge at the intersection of Jakes Gerwel Drive and Govan Mbeki Road
- Construction of an elevated bi-directional MyCiTi bus overpass on Govan Mbeki over the Duinefontein intersection.
- Construction of two pedestrian bridges over the Lotus River Canal.
- Construction of a retaining wall along the Lotus River Canal.
- 2.4km of Non-motorised transport infrastructure with a Class 3 cycle facility on Govan Mbeki east and west bound.
- Signage, street lighting, electrical works, landscaping, drainage, technology infrastructure, ducting and road-markings and traffic signals.
How it will affect you
Construction is planned in phases from September 2023 for approximately 3 years. Road works will be limited to 09:00 - 15:00 on weekdays to avoid peak traffic periods. Traffic will be accommodated using temporary detours and walkways for pedestrians while access to properties and businesses will be maintained. Work will still impact traffic and cause delays. Motorists are urged to consider public transport, ride-sharing and lift club options. The City realises the inconvenience involved and appreciates the patience of everyone affected.
Job opportunities
Although the bulk of construction requires highly specialised skills, the project includes some opportunities to employ local labour and to source goods and services from local subcontractors. Residents who are interested are encouraged to confirm that they are registered and their details up to date at the local Subcouncil. Residents who are not yet registered can look out for new registration drives in each area before work starts.
