The project along AZ Berman Drive where the City is implementing new infrastructure for the MyCiTi bus service is 31% complete. The Urban Mobility Directorate has installed two signboards with artist impressions of what the end product will look like by January 2027, when the project is due for completion. Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, visited the site in Mitchells Plain earlier today, to see how these signboards can aid in inspiring and informing commuters.

With the roll-out of the MyCiTi bus service along AZ Berman Drive, the City is demonstrating its commitment to bring a world-class Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service to Mitchells Plain.

‘This is a massive investment in providing the commuters from Mitchells Plain with a public transport service that is scheduled, reliable, safe, dignified, and affordable. Once the buses are operating it will be a gamechanger for local residents who need to travel beyond the metro-south east.

‘However, I know that it is difficult to remain patient and supportive of the project while you are stuck in traffic disruptions that are caused by the construction of rapid bus lanes, bus stations, and other road improvements.

‘We have now installed two signboards in the vicinity of the construction areas so that commuters and residents can get an idea of what our end goal is, and be reminded of what we are trying to achieve to keep Capetonians moving. The short-term frustration is undeniable, but the long-term benefits will be well worth it and unlock new opportunities for the community,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

One signboard is located opposite the Watergate Mall, and the other sign in the median of AZ Berman Drive, in close proximity to the police station. These signboards depict the red bus lanes, bus stops, general layout of the dual carriageway, walking and cycle lanes, and the landscaping.

The roadworks along AZ Berman Drive are progressing as planned. The lane closures, traffic switches, and detours are implemented in phases to accommodate the construction, and the project team is trying their best to work as fast as possible, and to limit the disruptions to traffic flow.

At least one lane of traffic remains open in each direction along AZ Berman Drive at all times. Work is scheduled to avoid peak traffic times and access to homes and businesses is maintained throughout the construction period.

Currently, the team is working on the road between the intersections with Highlands Drive and Wespoort Drive on the northbound carriageway from the Promenade Mall towards the R300; and road between the intersections with Nduli Street and Sesame Street on the southbound carriageway from the R300 towards the Promenade Mall.
