The City of Cape Town is continuing with the construction of new and upgraded transport infrastructure along Govan Mbeki Road. An additional lane closure is planned from Tuesday, 28 October 2025 to accommodate the urgent relocation of underground municipal services, between the Wetton Circle and the Jan Smuts Drive intersection.

Residents and all road users are to take note of the following traffic changes to be implemented:

  • Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Wetton Circle and Low Road to accommodate the urgent relocation of underground municipal services
  • Traffic will be accommodated on two lanes in each direction between Low Road and the intersection with Jan Smuts Drive

‘We are appealing to all the residents and road users who travel in this area to please be patient with this important MyCiTi Phase 2A construction work that needs to take place in order to accommodate the urgent relocation of underground municipal services. The works will regrettably add to congestion, but we ask that you always keep in mind the safe, affordable and reliable MyCiTi bus service that is coming your way, the public transport option we have all been waiting for along this corridor,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
