City rolls out innovative bus traffic signal system along Blaauwberg Road
The City’s Mobility Directorate is expanding its innovative system of bus traffic signals along Blaauwberg Road in Table View following a successful pilot of these MyCiTi bus traffic signals in May 2022. The City will be installing the bus signals on 26 and 27 May 2026, and if all goes as planned, the signals will be live from 28 May 2026.
The pilot of the improved bus traffic signal system for the MyCiTi service was a success and is working as efficiently in Cape Town as it does elsewhere in the world by reducing confusion at the road intersections.
‘Road users must please still continue to follow the general traffic signals that apply to them, and are advised to approach the intersections with caution. The new bus signals apply to the MyCiTi buses only,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The system does not use red, amber or green, and is therefore less likely to be confused with the normal traffic signal system that uses these colours. The new traffic signal system’s only colour is white, using new symbols.
These new bus traffic signals will be introduced at four more intersections along Blaauwberg Road in Table View at:
- Wood and Study Road
- Blaauwberg and Boy de Goede Road
- Blaauwberg, Gill and Gie Road
- Blaauwberg, Koeberg and Potsdam Road
The signals will be incrementally implemented across the MyCiTi system and included in the South African Road Traffic Signs Manual for use by other cities and transport systems in South Africa.
The pilot project in 2022 included the following intersections in Table View:
- Blaauwberg Road and Table View MyCiTi Station (R27)
- Blaauwberg Road and Raatz Drive
- Blaauwberg Road and Grey Avenue
- Blaauwberg Road and Janssens Avenue
