The City regrets to inform road users that the Stanhope bridge in Claremont will only have one lane in each direction available to traffic until further notice. The lane reduction is an emergency intervention after the existing retaining wall on the southeast quadrant of the Stanhope bridge failed on 26 January 2026.

Road users who travel along Imam Haron Road, Main Road and Palmyra Road and need to cross the bridge are advised to consider alternative routes for commuting as this lane reduction on the bridge crossing is having a severe impact on traffic flow, in particular during the peak periods.

‘The lane reduction on Stanhope bridge in Claremont is an emergency intervention after the existing retaining wall on the southeast quadrant of the Stanhope bridge failed on Monday morning, 26 January 2026. Thankfully, no injuries to the workers or the public were reported. To ensure the safety of workers, pedestrians and motorists, the affected area on and below the bridge was immediately cordoned off. We apologise for the inconvenience to motorists, local residents and the general public and empathise with the affected commuters. However, we can assure everyone that we will try our utmost to complete the remedial work as soon as possible,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The contractor is currently investigating the cause of the existing retaining wall failure, and will implement remedial works at the affected area as soon as possible. Due to the complex nature of the anticipated remedial works, reinstatement of the existing retaining wall could take up to six weeks to complete, if all goes as planned.

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate commenced work on the Stanhope bridge in mid-2025. These works form part of the City’s MyCiTi Phase 2A construction project. The work along this bridge is anticipated to be completed towards the end of 2027.
