The City of Cape Town invites artists and creative practitioners to submit concept proposals for public artworks at the new MyCiTi bus station in Claremont. This station, to be built in coming months, will be a major public transport hub within the Metro-South East Corridor, otherwise known as Phase 2A of the MyCiTi roll-out. This initiative forms part of the City’s ongoing commitment to integrating high-quality public art into transport infrastructure; enhancing the commuter experience while celebrating the cultural, historical and environmental identity of the communities it serves. Submissions are now open and close on Friday, 27 March 2026.

The Claremont bus facility will be the first and largest station on the Metro-South East Corridor.

As a high-volume interchange, the planned Claremont MyCiTi bus station has been identified as a focus for artworks, with multiple large-scale artwork opportunities for the internal and external walls, a prominent curved glass facade and possible sculptural elements.

‘This is an exciting opportunity for artists to showcase their creativity, while celebrating Claremont’s history and enhancing the look of the area. A market-related budget will be allocated based on the size, materials and installation of artworks across different spaces in the precinct. Artists can apply for one space per application. Separate submissions are needed for multiple spaces around the bus station. We are extremely excited to receive the proposals,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The spaces that artists will be responding to in Claremont include the:

  • Prominent concrete and vertical wall surface (approximately 12m x 9m)
  • Curved glass façade (approximately 25m x 5m)
  • Foyer entrance wall
  • Platform-adjacent walls

Artists will be required to describe their proposed concept and provide preliminary design ideas that outline the main idea and visual approach.

Artists are requested to share online links to previous work. The call is open to South African residents and artist collectives.
