Public Artwork Commissions: future Hanover Park and Sesame stations
The City of Cape Town invites artists and creative practitioners to submit design proposals for public artworks at the planned, new MyCiTi bus stations in Hanover Park and Lentegeur. These stations form part of the next phase of the City’s MyCiTi bus service,
Phase 2A which will connect Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Hanover Park, Wynberg, Claremont and surrounding areas through scheduled bus rapid transit (BRT) public transport services.
MyCiTi has advanced the integration of local public art into Cape Town’s urban environment. Throughout the city, our bus stations display original works by local artists to help create welcoming, vibrant, and distinctive public spaces that celebrate local identity, culture and community, while enhancing the passenger experience.

Available Artwork Opportunities
Both stations have opportunities for two types of public artwork: a vinyl graphic artwork on the glass entrance walls and a mural artwork on two plastered walls within each station.
Mural Artwork: Both the Hanover Park and Sesame (Lentegeur) stations have two designated plastered wall areas suitable for a painted mural, mosaic, or tiled artwork. The walls are 1.7 m high, with one wall measuring 8.4m in length and the other 7.2m. Various media may be used, provided that the materials are durable and suitable for the surface. As the artwork will be viewed from a distance, designs should be bold, visually striking, and easily legible.
Vinyl Graphic Artwork: The entrance area of each station, adjacent to the ticket booth, has been allocated for graphic artwork. This area comprises a continuous wall approximately 15.3m long and 1.6m high, consisting of vertical glass panels. The artwork should consider both the close-up experience of passengers entering the station and the broader view of the artwork from a distance, as seen by pedestrians and passengers in passing vehicles. The final artwork will be produced on adhesive vinyl applied to the exterior surface of the station glass. A degree of transparency may be incorporated into the design. Alternative materials may also be considered, provided they can guarantee a minimum lifespan of seven years and can be delivered within the available budget.

Proposal Submission and Evaluation

Artists are requested to provide a design proposal for the station artwork and references to their previous work.
AI generated artworks will not be accepted. If any AI tools are used for showing a view of the work on the station, or if AI tools are used to contribute to the final design, then the artist is required to disclose these tools and methods in their description of the work.
The more references an artist or designer can provide for previous work the better the adjudication team is able to assess the value of the proposed design. If work has merit but the design is not sufficiently developed the artist may be requested by the adjudication to provide a more detailed artwork/design for consideration.
If the draft design submitted by the artist has sufficient detail and good references the adjudication panel will be in a position to commission the artwork.
While artists are encouraged to give free range to their imaginations, designs that show an appreciation of the unique history of the station areas; the indigenous natural environment; and Cape Town’s local aesthetics will be favored. Inspiration may be gained from simple anecdotes, epic historical events, or subjects of specific relevance for the areas around the stations in Hanover Park and Lentegeur (Sesame station).
Artworks will be commissioned through a public open competition, overseen by a professional curatorial team in consultation with the City’s Arts and Culture Branch and Urban Mobility departments. Submissions will be evaluated against the following criteria:
- Artistic and cultural merit
- Contextual relevance and public accessibility
- Feasibility and likelihood of successful delivery
The call is open to South African residents and artist collectives.
NB The City reserves the right not to award a commission should proposals not meet the required standards.
