What's planned
The City of Cape Town started construction in the Claremont area in March 2025 in preparation for the next phase of the MyCiTi service.
The construction includes an extensive upgrade to Imam Haron, Chichester and Stanhope Roads.
Phase 2A of MyCiTi will provide quality, safe and direct public transport to more than 30 communities linking Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Wynberg and Claremont.
Work will involve reconstruction of roads with dedicated bus lanes, stops and stations, upgrading intersections with traffic signals, safer walking and cycling features and landscaping.
The roadworks will regrettably add to traffic delays and disruptions but is vital to meet the current and future transport needs of Cape Town.
- Upgrade of 2.9km of Chichester / Imam Haron Road in Claremont from Stanhope Road to the M5 Kromboom Parkway
- Dedicated median (bi-directional) bus lanes along Chichester Road up to the intersection of Imam Haron Road
- Uni-directional bus lanes from the intersection of Imam Haron with Chichester Road to the Claremont Bus interchange.
- Widening of Stanhope bridge with realignment of Iman Haron with Stanhope and Palmyra Roads.
- Construction of a median station at Kenilworth Centre.
- Left aligned bus stops at the Imam Haron and Chichester intersection (Third Avenue).
- Non-motorised transport infrastructure.
- Signage, street lighting, electrical works, landscaping, drainage, technology infrastructure, ducting and road-markings and traffic signals.
- 7 approved permanent full and partial road closures along Imam Haron Road and 5 approved full and partial road closures along Chichester Road. See map above for details.
How it will affect you
How construction will impact you
The City realises the impact of this work on residents and road users and will implement the following measures to help limit disruptions:
- Disruptive work is only planned on weekdays from 09:00 until 15:00
- At least one lane of traffic will stay open in each direction throughout
- Temporary detours and walkways will ensure pedestrian access and access to residential properties and business premises at all times
- Signage and traffic personnel will help keep traffic flowing and road users safe
- Road users are urged to allow for extra travel time, make use of public transport or lift clubs and to avoid traveling in peak times where possible
Thank you for your understanding as we invest in our road network for current and future users.
Job opportunities
There will be some opportunities for local labour and to source goods and services from local subcontractors registered at the local subcouncil. Interested residents should confirm that they are registered on the City’s Jobseeker Database at their local subcouncil or look out for new mobile registration drives to register before work starts.
