Spine Road depots

 Areas affected: Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain

 Start date: August 2022

Planned end date: March 2025

What's planned

In August 2022, construction will start on a facility housing two depots for the next phase of MyCiTi services, called Phase 2A.

The 15-hectare site will be at the heart of operations for Phase 2A of MyCiTi, linking tens of thousands of commuters from Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain with safe, reliable, direct public transport along one of the busiest transport corridors to Claremont and Wynberg.

Located near the corner of Spine Road and Mew Way, the facility will feature CCTV and security-controlled access on both roads and will serve as a base for the companies operating MyCiTi Phase 2A services.

The depots will be used to park, maintain, wash and dispatch buses as needed, initially accommodating 290 buses and many more as MyCiTi expands across the city. It also includes administrative offices, boardrooms and training space, and a range of facilities for staff and drivers.

The City-owned site is strategically located near the planned routes to reduce operating costs and to accommodate trips very early in the morning. The depots were approved after public engagement in 2021 and preparatory work is complete, paving the way for construction from August 2022 to March 2025.

The project is co-funded by a Dutch government grant and will create temporary jobs, local business opportunities, and permanent jobs once services start.

The good news for road users is that there is no major impact expected on traffic in the vicinity of works.
