Traffic lane switch on AZ Berman Drive as MyCiTi Phase 2A project reaches another milestone
The City of Cape Town's Urban Mobility Directorate is continuing with transport infrastructure upgrades along AZ Berman Drive in Mitchells Plain as part of the MyCiTi Phase 2A project. A traffic lane switch is planned for Friday, 26 June 2026. The traffic lane switch will take place on the carriageway between the BP service station and the Mitchells Plain Police Station along AZ Berman Drive.
‘The planned traffic lane switch from Friday, 26 June 2026, will move motorists travelling between the BP service station and the Mitchells Plain Police Station onto the newly completed carriageway, with two lanes available in each direction. We ask road users to please follow the temporary road markings, remain alert when travelling through the area and allow for extra travel time while crews complete the remaining works. I would like to thank residents, businesses and commuters for their continued patience as we work to keep Cape Town moving and delivering improved public transport infrastructure,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
Traffic lane switch details
- Traffic will move from the current northbound carriageway (towards Cape Town) to the newly completed southbound carriageway (towards Mitchells Plain).
- Vehicles will continue to travel in both directions, with two lanes available in each direction.
- Traffic cones and road markings will be in place to separate lanes and guide motorists safely through the construction zone.
All homes, businesses and public facilities with legally approved access will remain accessible throughout the construction period.
The City encourages road users to plan their journeys ahead of time, remain alert when travelling through the area and allow for additional travel time where necessary.
The last phase of the upgrade project entails the construction of a separate Non-Motorised Transport Facility along the eastern side of AZ Berman Drive, with the planned completion date being February 2027, if all goes according to plan.
