The Executive Mayor Dan Plato was joined by Alderman Felicity Purchase, the Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, on a site visit to the MyCiTi station in Adderley Street. The purpose of the inspection was to check that the service is operating under COVID-19 hygiene and social distancing protocols.

‘The MyCiTi bus service provides essential public transport within the City of Cape Town, ensuring that residents can travel to work and other destinations. Due to COVID-19, we have implemented additional protocols to assist residents to make use of the service in a manner which protects their health and safety. This morning I visited the MyCiTi station in Adderley Street, one of the busiest stations in the central business district. I was pleased to see that the operation of the MyCiti service continues according to the guidelines and regulations set in place to limit the spread of COVID-19. The City is taking every possible step to ensure commuters’ safety, but we also need those travelling on our buses to play their part by wearing masks and practising social distancing,’ said the Executive Mayor, Dan Plato.

The MyCiTi bus service resumed its normal weekday schedule on 1 June 2020 and its regular weekend schedule on Saturday, 6 June. The 50% capacity limit remains in place for MyCiTi buses, e-hailing services, and the Golden Arrow Bus Service until further notice.

‘We are encouraged by how responsible the MyCiTi commuters have been by taking the necessary precautions while travelling during this time; many of whom have had to adjust their schedules to accommodate the new capacity limits. We ask that commuters must please continue to adhere to the capacity restrictions, be it on the buses or on minibus-taxis that have a 70% capacity limit,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase.

These guidelines are expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future as we navigate this next, peak phase of the Coronavirus. It is vital that we continue adhering to the measures as set out by the National Government.

Please be advised that the following remains compulsory when making use of public transport services:

  • wear a face mask at all times
  • wash hands with soap and water before and after your trip
  • make use of hand sanitiser, if possible
  • do not touch common surfaces
  • stand and sit at least 1,5m apart from each other
  • do not touch your face
  • remain indoors at home if you are feeling sick

We are working tirelessly to sanitise MyCiTi buses, stations and facilities on a continuous basis throughout the day. We have also implemented measures at public transport interchanges to make it easier for commuters to practice social distancing. Please help us to limit the spread of COVID-19.

We will make it through as #OneCityTogether.
