Residents advised of temporary partial road closure along Claremont Boulevard
The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate would like to advise all road users of the temporary partial road closure of Claremont Boulevard from 23 March 2026 until the end of February 2027 as part of the ongoing transport infrastructure improvements in the area. The City’s Transport Planning and Network Management department will optimise the sequencing of the traffic signals in the area to assist with traffic flow.
The temporary partial road closure along Claremont Boulevard will be in place between Stanhope and Hawthorne Roads and will allow for work that forms part of the roll-out of the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service, which will connect commuters from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha with Wynberg and Claremont.
Road users are to please note the following traffic arrangements:
- The traffic lane from Stanhope Road towards Hawthorne Road will be closed to traffic. A detour will be in place via Station Road and Main Road.
- The traffic lane from Hawthorne Road towards Stanhope Road will remain open.
‘We thank motorists, residents and businesses for their patience and cooperation as our team works to complete these essential infrastructure improvements. We fully recognise the significant inconvenience these lane closures cause for everyone travelling in the area and we ask for your continued understanding. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
‘Residents can look forward to improved intersections, enhanced landscaping, better signage, and in some cases, new street furniture and public art.’
‘Beyond delivering an affordable, safe bus service with dedicated lanes – connecting residents with direct access to Wynberg and Claremont – these upgrades will help revitalise the area. Residents can look forward to improved intersections, enhanced landscaping, better signage, and in some cases new street furniture and public art. Together, these improvements will boost the local economy, stimulate development and create new business opportunities,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
This planned closure follows the recent reopening of the closed lane on the Stanhope Bridge, after the retaining wall of the bridge was successfully restored.
Road users are urged to please factor in additional travel time, approach the area with caution, and follow the temporary signs and guidance from flag personnel.
