The City is refurbishing the MyCiTi bus fleet that operates the D01 Route between Khayelitsha and the Civic Centre station. The City has leased 14 buses to ensure continued service while the refurbishment is under way, and to also add capacity to the routes servicing Mitchells Plain. The buses have been branded MyCiTi and will start operating along the D01 route from Monday, 11 May 2026.

The refurbishment of the fleet will take about three months, and once complete, commuters will enjoy a commute in buses that will be as good as new.

Commuters from Khayelitsha should please note, however, that the leased buses are high floor buses. Unfortunately, these buses cannot dock at the Civic Centre station platform that is designed for low-floor buses. Therefore, a temporary stop will be placed on Hertzog Boulevard directly next to the Civic Centre for all D01 passengers to board and alight.

Commuters from Mitchells Plain will also benefit. As the 14 loan buses are introduced along the D01 in Khayelitsha, the City will redeploy low-floor buses along the routes between Mitchells Plain and the Civic Centre station to add capacity.

‘The demand for the N2 Express service is exceptional, and as a result, the fleet that operates along these routes are now in urgent need of refurbishment. The 14 buses that we have leased will assist us to get the refurbishment done, while also enabling us to add capacity for both Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain. Unfortunately, the leased buses have high-floors, and it will cause some inconvenience as our stations are only designed for low-floor buses. Be as it may, our operations team is doing all they can to assist commuters with navigating these temporary changes. I want to thank our commuters for their support and understanding. Once the fleet has been refurbished these buses will be as good as new,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

Important changes for D01 commuters over the next few months:

  • At the Civic Centre station, all leased buses operating on route D01 will pick up and drop off passengers at a temporary stop at the drop-and-go in Hertzog Boulevard, outside the Artscape Theatre. Commuters waiting at the temporary stop may still make use of the ablution facilities at the Civic Centre by tapping in and out at the station without incurring any additional costs, as long as they tap in on the bus at the temporary stop within 45 minutes of exiting (tapping out) the station.
  • Passengers will be required to tap in and tap out on the loan buses
  • Passengers transferring to other routes should tap out on the bus at the temporary stop, and proceed to Civic Centre station to tap in and continue their journey

Please also note that although the buses may look different, the usual MyCiTi rules apply. The leased high-floor buses which will be in used in the interim do not have boarding ramps, wheelchair space and other universal access features. However, low-floor buses will be part of the fleet operating along the D01, and as such, commuters in wheelchairs are advised to please board these buses instead.

‘The MyCiTi buses are bespoke vehicles that are manufactured for Bus Rapid Transit conditions to ensure we can provide universal accessibility. These buses are not easily attainable with the lead time on new buses being two years. Thus, the high floor buses we have leased, unfortunately, are not be universally accessible, but I have been assured that there will always be low floor buses available for commuters in wheelchairs along the D01.

'We are committed to ensuring that our buses are safe and reliable for commuters. We are committed to keeping Cape Town moving, we will therefore through this programme, be extending the life span of the fleet and ensuring the overall bus condition improves. We thank commuters for their patience during this time and apologise for any inconvenience caused,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
