The City of Cape Town is inviting residents from Gugulethu and surrounding communities such as Ottery and Manenberg to an information day to learn more about the planned MyCiTi construction along the portion of Govan Mbeki Road that connects Ottery Road with Link Road.

City officials will be available on Tuesday, 12 September 2023, at the Fezeka Council Chambers in Gugulethu and the Sherwood Park Community Centre in Manenberg to answer questions.

The City of Cape Town intends to start construction in September 2023 along the portion of Govan Mbeki Road that connects Ottery Road with Link Road in preparation for the next phase of the MyCiTi bus service.

‘It is truly encouraging to see how the team continues to make progress with Phase 2A of MyCiTi. We encourage residents to please join our officials in Gugulethu and Manenberg next week as we are keen to share the details of the upcoming MyCiTi construction that is set to take place along Govan Mbeki Road. We want residents to understand just how this bus service will bring quality, safe and scheduled public transport to their community with high frequency public transport along dedicated lanes,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

It is important to note that all road users and residents will be benefiting from the intersection upgrades with this specific construction project as it will help ease congestion, provide safer cycling and walking lanes, provide improved street lighting and landscaping to uplift the surrounding areas.

The public open days are as follows:

Gugulethu

  • Date: 12 September 2023
  • Venue: Fezeka Council Chambers, Fezeka Building, Corner of Govan Mbeki Road and Steve Biko Drive,
  • Time: 14:00 – 18:00

  • Date: 12 September 2023
  • Venue: Sherwood Park Community Centre, 74 – 80, 4th Avenue, Sherwood Park, Manenberg

The construction is planned in phases from September 2023 for approximately three years and roadworks will be limited from 09:00 to 15:00 on weekdays to avoid peak traffic periods. The construction for Phase 2A is under way in portions. The planned work for this portion of the project will include:

  • Upgrade of 2,4km of Govan Mbeki Road, including dedicated MyCiTi lanes
  • Construction of an open station near the intersection with Vygekraal Road
  • Widening of bridge support structures at the intersection with Jakes Gerwel Drive
  • Construction of an elevated bridge across the Duinefontein Road intersection
  • Construction of two pedestrian bridges and a retaining wall over the Lotus River Canal
  • Construction of 2,4km of non-motorised transport facilities for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Signage, landscaping, drainage, road-markings and traffic signal improvements

Although the bulk of construction requires highly specialised skills, the project includes some opportunities to employ local labour and to source goods and services from local subcontractors. Residents who are interested are encouraged to confirm that they are registered and their details up to date at the local Subcouncil. Residents who are not yet registered can look out for new registration drives in each area before work starts.
