The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate wants to inform commuters and residents that this weekend, the City will be closing the temporary traffic circle in Lansdowne where the Sky Circle is under construction. The public is advised to make alternative arrangements as no traffic will be allowed to move through the intersection.

‘During this closure, the contractor will connect the bridge ramps to the Sky Circle. This is a massive project milestone, and we are excited to see how the engineering feat is now taking full shape. While the closure is in effect, the contractor will also install the new traffic signal system at the intersection. Thus, as from next Monday, traffic signals as opposed to the temporary circle will guide traffic through the intersection,’ said Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility.

  • The City will close the temporary circle at the Strandfontein Road, Govan Mbeki Road (M9) and Jan Smuts Drive (M17) intersection from 13:00 on Friday, 23 October until 04:00 on Monday, 26 October 2026.

‘Road users must please use alternative routes, and plan for some disruptions as the closure will impact traffic flow in the area. I want to thank the local community and commuters in advance for your patience and cooperation as we work toward keeping Cape Town moving. There will be temporary signage in place and flag personnel to guide road users, but it is best to avoid this area if possible,’ said Councillor Quintas.

The project team converted the signalised intersection into a temporary traffic circle in March 2025, where the Sky Circle is currently being constructed. Now that the circle has been cast and the concrete has reached its design strength, the temporary traffic circle on ground level can be converted back to a four-way signalised intersection for all traffic, apart from the MyCiTi buses that will be using the elevated circle once the MyCiTi service starts operating along this route.

  • The elevated circle is about 6,2m above the ground, and for the exclusive use of the MyCiTi buses
  • The proposed Hanover Park closed median station is the closest MyCiTi station to this intersection and will serve commuters along the trunk route to operate along Govan Mbeki Road. The station will be built at a later stage, closer to the implementation date of the service.

There are significant upgrades at the intersection at Govan Mbeki Road and Jan Smuts Drive to improve traffic flow, including:

  • the reconfiguration of the intersection;
  • dedicated turning lanes;
  • improved traffic signals; and
  • improved signalisation or sequencing
  • walking and cycling lanes

The project in Lansdowne commenced in July 2022, and the anticipated completion date is April 2027, if all goes as planned.
