Hop on for Free-Ride Day on Cape Town’s favourite bus service, as MyCiTi launches new routes and timetable improvements on the last weekend of Transport Month.

It’s October – Transport Month – and what better time to consider new ways of getting around that save you money, contribute to better health and a cleaner environment? Making the switch to public transport, walking to and from the bus stop, and using a bicycle or even a skateboard, are just some of the options to try out, especially as the days grow longer and warmer.

Highlighting the positive contribution of alternatives to private car use, Transport Month began with hundreds of people enjoying an Open Streets Day event from Observatory to the city centre. Many joined local and provincial leaders and civil society groups on a leisurely cycle along the usually busy route through Salt River and Woodstock.

A day of free rides

To end the month-long transport focus, on Sunday, 29 October 2017, MyCiTi will be holding another of its popular free-ride days on all its routes. No myconnect card is necessary on the day and you can travel as far and as often as you like.

So, if you are a regular user who would like to take family and friends for a day out to the V&A Waterfront, the Sea Point Promenade, to Camps Bay beach, Hout Bay harbour, or to see the famous waves at Bloubergstrand, now is your chance. It’s also the ideal opportunity for regular passengers to familiarise themselves with any changes to routes and schedules that may affect them from 28 October.

For those Capetonians who have never been aboard a MyCiTi bus, this is the day to find out what all the excitement is about. You’ll discover that using the system is much easier than you think – and perhaps your next purchase will be a myconnect card of your own.

Expanding services

On Saturday, 28 October, MyCiTi will be introducing changes to some routes and stops and refining timetables to better meet the growing demand for bus services.

“This is all part of shaping the MyCiTi service to match the travel patterns of our users more efficiently,” says Councillor Herron.

“As a City we are committed to rolling out MyCiTi and to implementing an improved public transport network across all modes. This is a key part of ensuring that our city is sustainable, and that we achieve our goal of reversing the spatial legacy of apartheid so that everyone can access work opportunities, services and all Cape Town has to offer.”
